Choosing the right solution for your case management system needs is an important decision for your court. The investment you make when purchasing the Odyssey Case Management System is the start of an exciting long term relationship with this powerful and flexible case management tool.

How you leverage this system to enhance your business and grow with your court organization is equally as important. Here are some considerations to be mindful of before you get started:

1. Business Practice Changesensure-proper-erp-implementation

Have a plan for considering and vetting business practice change associated with implementing a new case management system.   Remember the fact that Odyssey may handle a process differently from your legacy system doesn’t mean it cannot work for you. Be open to changing your business process to leverage the best of the system while minimizing costly and time consuming customization.

2. Flexibility is Good (until it isn’t)

Odyssey is a flexible tool that can provide a variety of options to support court business processes. On the other hand, consistency in process can be very important for organizational reporting and statistical needs. Having a plan in place for how those business decisions will be made and communicated across the organization (such as where consistency in process is key and why) to prepare for change is critical!

3. Beware of “Scope Creep”

Determining and managing the scope for your case management system implementation is important. Requirements can and do change.   There will be many demands for additional functionality and automation throughout your project – you can count on that!   What you can also count on is the need for a “Change Control” process to receive, consider and vet requests in order to manage time, quality and cost throughout your implementation. Document a process that you and your Tyler rep will follow throughout your project.

4. Howdy Partner!

When you contract with Tyler Technologies to implement the Odyssey case management system or any of their other product offerings, it truly is a long-term partnership. The common goal is SUCCESS! Be sure to talk to your Tyler representative about significant business practice changes or innovations your court is contemplating. The case management system is nearly always involved. Likewise, something new is always around the corner with Odyssey. The earlier and more often you each communicate plans, the better!

5. E-everything

As you move toward an electronic court environment with Odyssey, make sure governing rules, statues and court policies support your e-goals. Examples include: eFiling, eSignatures, and redaction and access issues.   This work often involves many people, groups and processes which can take significant lead time to work through. Review governing court rules, statutes and court policy well before you start your project.
