A: Door County is what many people call their second home, which is wonderful. People summer here, bring their families on holidays, and even retire here. The influx of people in the summer, and most recently the winters, brings along many who are buying/selling, wanting to do genealogy on their families, or even come to be married. We definitely see many new brides and grooms who come and use Door County as their destination wedding location.

Interview with Karl Thoennes, Court Administrator South Dakota Second Judicial Circuit

Q: You are the court administrator for South Dakota’s Second Judicial Circuit in Sioux Falls. Tell us about a typical day on the job.

A: As so many of us say in this line of work, there really is no typical day. We often joke with each other that our families have no idea what we do for a living because it takes half an hour to explain. Today I spoke to a Judge in Washington State about prisoner transport protocols, then did a media interview on jury duty, then a staff meeting on logistics for an upcoming murder trial, then had an email discussion about finding Swahili interpreters. I go from a meeting on our $11 million courthouse expansion to a phone call with our robe vendor in California because the zippers keep breaking on the judges’ robes we’ve ordered lately.

Q: The County Clerk’s office implemented a comprehensive court records management software system that ties the police, prosecutor and court records together. What motivated you to create this system? Is it a homegrown solution, commercial software or a hybrid?

A: Our court records management system was created out of a need to get things done on time, provide better service to our constituents and reduce the stress on court staff. We had asked for several additional employees over the years and had been refused. We were in a situation such that we were falling further and further behind in getting our work done and needed a fix that did not include new employees.

What are the biggest improvements or advantages in using this new technology versus your previous system? 

Val Wood: The biggest improvement is integration – all recording functions are now integrated into one system. Additionally, our new system allows for eRecording, which is a significant advantage.
